Photojournalism Lessons

Throughout this cycle, I’ve focused a lot of my attention on furthering both my own photojournalism skills and the skills of others around me. In the football game post, I got to cover football for the first time, coaching a new staff writer with me. I also helped lead two different workshops about how cameras and camera settings work!

Covering Orchestra

When I covered the orchestra concert, I wanted to be very mindful of not creating repetitive coverage, especially because I was working with a limited number of people (those I could see from the crowd) and their limited range of motion (they are always sitting). Throughout this coverage, I focus on diversifying my subject from different angles (even capturing multiple at once or just focusing on Mr. Gilchrist). I also attempted to cover the percussion in the back and the middle schoolers who also joined the performance. Through these efforts, I was able to cover the event in a less monotonous way.

Covering Cherry Blossom Festival

When I attended the Cherry Blossom Festival, I immediately noticed how much culture and heritage I was surrounded by. The festival was a celebration of Japanese culture, and I wanted to capture that with my photos. Specifically, I enjoyed the dances, where they donned traditional clothing and were very expressive.
