Native American Representation

This story revolved around Native American representation in government, which was inspired by the results of the most recent election. Going into our interview with the Ohlone Tribe Chairwoman, my co-writer and I were more focused on our source’s background in politics and their opinions about the current representation. Yet, during the interview, we found ourselves veering into a completely different topic: an impactful protest the tribe recently held, the Trial of Truth, and the importance of the tribe’s federal recognition. This anecdote then gave our story more nuance, taking our source’s beliefs and putting them into action. This story reminded me of the importance of an open mind going into our interviews, as every source has stories that we might not initially consider.
